5 Tips to Enjoy Christmas and Feel Terrific

Christmas is time to relax and enjoy the company of loved ones. It’s also a time of feasting and merriment. In traditional times when food was not so abundant,  feasting meant fine meats, seasonal vegetables and traditional homemade puddings. Just having that was considered well off as being able to afford good food was not something everybody enjoyed.

These days we have an abundance of food. Year round we are overfed but often undernourished. Modern diets are usually high in sugar and refined carbohydrates while low in vital nutrients needed for good health. At Christmas, this goes into overdrive as we gorge on sweet things, alcohol, coffees and other treats.

If you’re anything like me there comes a point during Christmas where it starts to feel like too much. Too many parties, late nights, buckets of chocolates and my favourite mince pies, all take their toll on your health and state of well being. Christmas week draws on and the hangover intensifies.

The microbiome is name given to the trillions of bacteria and yeasts that live inside your gut. The exact number is completely unknown but people like to pretend it’s around 100 trillion (1).  These bacteria interact with our bodies either helping or hindering both our guts and our immune systems.

Clearly we if we could master our micobiome we could possibly reduce the risk and occurrence of many of our modern ills. But what does a healthy microbiome actually look like?


Taking care of your microbiome (part 1)

‘All disease may begin in the gut, but the key to a healthy gut is the microbiome’.

Microbiome is the name given the some 10 trillion bacterial cells that make their home inside your gut (1). There are more than 1000 different species in each gut and the species vary from person to person. Research shows the micobiome effects many aspects of human health. These include weight gain (2), autoimmune conditions (3), digestive problems, mood (4), hormonal issues and susceptibility to colds and flues.


Confused about Food Intolerance?

There are plenty of companies going around at the moment offering food intolerance tests. With a growing market all you have to do is a google search to find plenty of options.  There are also plenty of testimonials of people including celebrates who claim to have seen dramatic improvements since eliminating intolerant foods. So what actually is food intolerance and how is it caused?


IBS – Getting to the root of the problem.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is common and affects up to 1 in 5 people (1). At some point you may realise you’ve had bloating, gas and cramps for some time so you go see the doctor. He gives you the label of IBS and some drugs to help you along your way. However, neither of these actions helps you to understand what’s going on or how to actually fix the root problem.


Leaky Gut! Probably the Cause of Your IBS

Up until recently if your heard someone talking about leaky gut they probably had a pony-tail and sandals. And up until recently it was laughed at by the medical profession. It was nothing more than a theory developed within the alternative circles to explain how inflammation in the gut could lead to an increasing number of food intolerances. That is of course until a few years ago when Alessio Fasano discovered Zonulin, the chemical responsible for making our guts ‘leaky’ (1).

As a nutritionist, I seldom get a client who doesn’t have some sort of problem with their digestion. For a lot of people bloating, gas or cramps are the norm, or often food just seems to sit in the stomach. Digestive problems are on the rise in the western world and our modern diet and life-style are the driving force behind it. (1)


The Right Way to Deal with Heartburn

Heartburn is very common and see it all the time with the people I work with. Sometimes people don’t get heartburn but they do feel that food sometimes just sits in their stomach. In either case, the root cause is the same.

Usually when someone is faced with heartburn and that uncomfortable feeling like the food is not digesting they will turn to antacids to remedy the problem. This has the effect of neutralising the stomach acid (know as Hydorchloric acid or HCL) and the heart burn goes away. Problem solved, or so you think, till the condition comes back again.

Autoimmune disease occurs when the immune system becomes dysregulatied and attacks cells of the body, mistaken them for foreign invaders.
